What Is Included In A Support Order?

The answers to any questions are different for our clients depending on whether they live in Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. However, despite the differences, there are many similarities about what costs are included:

  • Housing costs
  • Food
  • Clothes
  • Education needs
  • Medical needs

The general list of what child support should cover is consistent across most jurisdictions.

How Is Support Calculated?

Support is calculated by looking closely at the income of both parents and running a complex calculation based on that and the needs of the child. These calculations look at income, assets, housing and, of course, the child’s basic needs.

However, the calculation can be up for debate, as we can make arguments for the inclusion or exclusion of certain factors based on your situation.

How Long Must A Parent Pay Child Support?

Child support payments – with the exception of an emancipated minor – end when the child turns 18 unless they are still in high school. If the child is still in high school, then child support payments stop once they graduate. If the child is emancipated, support can end sooner.
